Surprise proposals are my jam and I love when I get the opportunity to photograph one.
This surprise proposal with Taylor & Hayley was no different. Taylor reached out wanting to do something outdoors and intimate and after a bit of back and forth we settled on one of the best pockets of sun in Kansas City. Well, Kansas City adjacent, I suppose. Burr Oaks woods has been featured on my blog several times over the years for very good reason.
Burr Oaks is a beautiful park in Blue Springs with several areas to choose from. The grass is beautiful and golden in the fall and this patch of trees is beautiful whenever you decide to go. Word of advice if you choose to go before the frost? It is tick CITY.
The tree area is a little more forgiving and it’s very easy to photograph with other sessions going on around you while still feeling private. When you go around sunset like we did here, you get the most beautiful light that peaks through the trees and like I mentioned, there’s plenty to go around.
Setting up a surprise proposal
There’s so many ways we can do it, but my preferred way is always going to be easier all around than popping out of a bush or from behind a building. (Although i’ve done those things and also love them). We set this up as if they were just getting some professional photos together because they hadn’t before. Taylor and I decided we’d put together a pose where their backs were to one another to make it easy for her to get on one knee without being suspicious. Hayley was shocked and it made for incredible photos while making for even better cuddles in the sun after.
